The How to guide on running a fun, successful, and profitable Golf event or Tournament

One the first if not the first decisions to be made when deciding to have a golf event is what cause or charity you want to benefit from your event. Golf events and golf tournaments raise money each year for medical research, school funding, calamity relief, and many others causes. It is important to designate clearly and early on why you are asking people to donate their time and money. People will gladly give to a cause that they care about or someone they know cares about. If they have a personal touch with a cause they want to donate their time and money. The spirit of giving is an innate quality in all people.

Make the cause or charity the forefront of all of the decisions you make regarding your event. The cause or charity goes at the top of all materials put out by the event. It is mentioned in every conversation and is used in making decisions on other sponsors, locations, gifts chosen, everything. The last thing you want is to have a cause you are supporting and a sponsor or donation that contradicts that charity. For example, if you are supporting a local hospital that has a drug rehabilitation program, you do not want sponsors from liquor companies. This makes common sense but might be forgotten with the excitement of getting a donation.

The next important step is establish what committees you will have to help you run the event and what their responsibilities will be. These committees will need to include some or all of the following;

Honorary Chairman (Someone well known) Tournament Chairman (A leader) Sponsor Chairman (A sales professional with many connections) Golf Chairman (Manages the golf events, has some golf experience) Food and Beverage Chairman (Manages the lunch and/or dinner, on course beverages) Gift and Prize Chairman (Finds the prizes, good shopper) Marketing Chairman (Advertising/Marketing background, know how to promote)

The committee chair people and the committee’s can come from people in your organization; participants that want to be more involved. Ask people for help and they will love to get involved. Make sure these people understand the reason they are there, what you expect them to do. Giving them an outline of their responsibilities and expectations will make there job very easy. Keep in mind treating them, as you would want to be treated. Remember they are volunteers, not employees!

Early on in your planning process it is important to set some goals for how many golfers you will want to have participate. As you have seen in the examples previously the more golfers you have, the better your chances for success in raising money. The other component of finding golfers to consider is when you establish your committees. These committee members should be as large part of finding golfers. If you can establish 7 or more committees and each committee head can recruit can 10 or more golfers, you are off to a great start.
